Orangery roof lanterns

Home/Orangery roof lanterns
Traditional timber, hand-built in Norfolk

A roof lantern made for an orangery

An orangery is defined by its lantern: a glazed roof set into a flat roof, filling the room below with daylight. Tuck's Wood has been building traditional timber glazed roofs since 1984, and today roof lanterns are all we make, by hand, in our own factory in Norfolk.

Every lantern is built from solid sapele hardwood, with our own aluminium weather cappings outside. You get the warmth of real timber inside and a low-maintenance exterior that protects the woodwork for years. Choose one of our 45 standard models, or have a bespoke lantern made to measure for your orangery.

Why timber suits an orangery

In keeping with traditional joinery

Painted timber sits naturally alongside the sash windows, doors and mouldings of a traditional orangery, with delicately profiled rafters and hips you can see from the room below.

Low maintenance outside

Our powder-coated aluminium cappings protect the external woodwork and clamp the glass down, while the timber is finished in several coats of microporous paint.

Warm and quiet inside

Double glazing comes as standard with a U-value of 1.2. Triple glazing brings it down to about 0.8, cutting heat loss, condensation and noise even further.

Choosing a lantern for your orangery

Size and shape

Standard lanterns run from 1115 x 1115mm up to 3840 x 2205mm, in square, rectangular and octagonal forms. For larger or unusual orangeries we make bespoke lanterns of almost any shape, including ovals, combinations and lanterns with side-frames or cupolas.

Style

Choose from four series of standard designs, Heritage, Contemporary, Fusion and Octagonal, each with full dimensioned drawings, or a bespoke design of your own.

Colour

White or slate grey as standard, or any colour you choose to match your orangery. Marine-grade aluminium is available for coastal homes.

Ventilation

Manual or electric opening vents are recommended on larger lanterns, including vents that close automatically when it starts to rain.

Finishing touches

Ball, acorn, spire or pineapple finials, fleur-de-lis ridge cresting, decorative internal bosses (including one for hanging a chandelier) and cornice pelmets to hide blind headrails.

What your builder needs to provide

The lantern sits on a lead-dressed kerb or upstand built into your orangery's flat roof. Its internal size should match the lantern's internal aperture exactly. See our edge details for how it fits together.

Orangery lantern questions

Do you build the whole orangery?

No. Roof lanterns are all we make. Your builder constructs the orangery, flat roof and kerb, and we supply the lantern, or supply and fit it with our own installation team.

Will one of your standard sizes fit?

Often, if you can plan the opening around one of our 45 standard models. If not, we make the lantern to measure for your opening.

How long does it take?

Each lantern typically takes around eight weeks to manufacture. It is fully assembled in our workshop, then dismantled for delivery.

What warranty do I get?

A 10-year structural warranty on the woodwork and cappings, five years on the glazing units, and a two-year service warranty on our installations.
