Roof lanterns... it's all we do!

Many firms can supply you with a glazed roof lantern for daylighting.  What makes Tuck's Wood Roof Lanterns different is that we build ours primarily out of solid hardwood.  And we manufacture them by hand, using time-honoured joinery skills.  We do this in our own factory here in Norfolk, in the United Kingdom.

Our high-quality roof lanterns are built for ultra-low maintenance, and come with a 10-year guarantee.

Our standard lanterns are designed for use on a flat roof with a pre-installed lead-dressed kerb or upstand .  The internal dimensions of this structure should correlate exactly with the internal aperture size of the roof lantern, excluding any internal finishes (click to see drawing).

Each lantern typically takes around eight weeks to manufacture, and they are fully assembled before being dismantled for transport.  They are then either delivered as a kit of parts (with installation guide), or installed by one of our specialist teams.

Construction
All our roof lanterns are constructed from engineered hardwood, with our unique external aluminium weather cappings for elegance and long life.  The cappings protect the wood and clamp down the glass, making them ultra-low maintenance.  As standard we also provide aluminium enclosures for the lower ends of the glazing panels – helping to prevent UV light from breaking down the unit's seal.  And for aesthetics and additional weather protection we fit an aluminium skirt (click to see drawing) around the perimeter of each lantern.

The principal construction material is sapele, an FSC-certified sustainable hardwood.  This has excellent properties – it is durable and hard-wearing, offers superb paint adhesion, and is resistant to both rot and fungal attack.  For even greater strength and stability we use engineered (laminated) sapele.  Screw holes are pre-drilled, and no filling is required.  All screws and cabling, etc. are hidden.

Assembly
Our roof lanterns feature delicately profiled rafters and hips, spanning between the roof plate/sill and the ridge beam.  Octagonal bosses are fitted at the convergence of ridge, hip and rafter assemblies (click to see bosses drawings).  The thumbnail drawings under the first two tabs below show the arrangement of rafters in our standard lanterns, and each of these can be clicked/tapped to reveal the full drawing set.

Roof pitches are typically 25°, and rainwater discharge is direct to the perimeter flat roof weathering surface.  Conduit channels with flush-fitting access covers are incorporated to accommodate concealed electrical cabling.  On larger models we typically fit one or more single- or double-pane electric vents as optional extras.
Glazing
We are one of the only high-end manufacturers of roof lanterns in the UK to offer double and triple glazing options.  All our glass comes from British suppliers (including the raw glass).  The self-cleaning, high-performance, dual-sealed units comprise two or three leaves of 4mm clear, toughened glass with 16mm argon-filled cavities.  Panels include a low-emissivity, heat-reflective coating – producing a thermal U-value down to 1.2 (for double-glazing) or 0.8 (triple-glazing).  We have other options for reducing solar gain that can eliminate the need for blinds.

Finishes
Our aluminium sections are prepared, welded and powder-coat painted, and woodwork is also usually supplied painted – as standard either in white (RAL 9016) or slate grey (BS 00-A-13):
RAL 9016
BS 00-A-13

Non-standard colours are available to meet customer specification.  We can also supply marine-grade aluminium for use in coastal environments.

Warranty
Our roof lanterns are designed for long life and ultra-low maintenance.  They have a structural warranty of 10 years for the woodwork, cappings, etc., and five years for the glazing panels.  In addition, our installations are covered by a two-year service warranty (see Warranty page).

Several core designs may be combined to create lanterns of almost any complex shape and almost any scale.  The arrangement of rafters is determined by the aperture size, and steel tie-bars may be added on wider spans.  Lantern roof sections can also be leaded rather than glazed where required.
